The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reiterated its commitment to pursuing the interests of Nigerian students independently, stating that it will continue to engage on national issues through its established structures and mandate.
In a statement issued in Abuja, NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, responded to recent public discussions involving the association and various advocacy groups, emphasizing the need for accurate reporting and responsible public discourse.
Akinteye reaffirmed his status as a student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology and called on media organizations to uphold professional standards by verifying information before publication.
The NANS president stated that the association remains focused on issues affecting students across the country and will continue to make decisions based on its assessment of matters concerning the welfare, safety, and educational interests of Nigerian students.
He noted that while NANS respects the role of civil society organizations and advocacy groups in promoting public causes, the association maintains its independence and reserves the right to determine the nature and extent of its participation in any campaign or public engagement.
Akinteye also commended organizations and stakeholders advocating for the safety and welfare of citizens, particularly efforts aimed at securing the release of abducted students and teachers.
According to him, NANS remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote the safe return of victims and the protection of educational institutions across the country.
He reiterated the association’s resolve to continue engaging relevant authorities on issues affecting students and to advocate for policies that strengthen security and improve access to education.
The NANS president further emphasized the importance of peaceful engagement, constructive dialogue, and collaboration among stakeholders in addressing national challenges.
He assured Nigerian students that the association would continue to defend their interests while working through lawful and democratic channels to achieve its objectives.
The statement concluded with a call for unity among stakeholders committed to advancing the welfare of students and promoting national development.
