Kaduna ADC members seek unity amid leadership dispute

KADUNA — A leadership dispute has emerged within the Kaduna State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with a group of longstanding party members calling for adherence to the party’s constitution and established structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna on Tuesday, the ADC Legacy Chairman in the state, Hon. Ahmed Tijjani Mustapha, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to the party and urged members to embrace dialogue and internal mechanisms in resolving differences.

Mustapha said the ADC coalition process in Kaduna began in March 2025 under the leadership of Dr. Salihu Lukman, with a committee established to coordinate consultations among stakeholders.

According to him, the legacy ADC was represented in the coalition by himself, as Kaduna State chairman from 2022 to 2026, and Alhaji Ibrahim A. Suleiman, a former National Organising Secretary and former Kaduna State chairman.

He explained that the coalition committee was later expanded to accommodate additional members and ensure broader participation.

Mustapha noted that differing interpretations had since emerged regarding the party’s leadership structure and the implementation of agreements reached during the coalition process.

He stressed the importance of respecting the party’s constitution, due process and internal democratic principles in addressing the issues.

“We remain committed to due process, internal democracy and the ideals upon which the ADC was founded. We believe all concerns should be addressed through lawful and constitutional means,” he said.

The party leader urged members, stakeholders and supporters to remain calm and avoid actions that could deepen divisions within the party.

On the issue of leadership, Mustapha said the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), at its meeting of May 30, 2026, approved a 12-month extension of the tenure of the National Working Committee, as well as state, zonal, local government and ward executives, pending the constitution of caretaker committees where necessary.

He said the decision provided guidance for the continued administration of party affairs pending further directives from the national leadership.

The ADC members also appealed to all groups within the party to prioritise unity and cooperation as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

“The ADC family is large enough to accommodate everyone. We should work together to build a strong and viable party structure in the interest of our members and supporters,” Mustapha said.

The group reiterated its commitment to strengthening the party, welcoming new members and supporting efforts aimed at promoting internal harmony and democratic participation.

It also commended the national leadership of the party for its efforts to foster unity and stability within the ADC.
