National Chairman of the People’s Redemption Party, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has urged President Bola Tinubu to resign, saying he has spectacularly failed to protect Nigerians.
Baba-Ahmed said, in a civilised democracy, Tinubu’s record on insecurity would have cost him the presidency long ago, adding that it would be unwise to wait for more schoolchildren and women to be kidnapped before calling for his resignation.
Speaking on The Morning Show, an Arise TV programme, Thursday, he said no one had been safe under the current administration and warned that Nigerians could be even more exposed to criminality between now and the 2027 general election.
His words: “What else is there to say? It is clear that President Bola Tinubu has no handle on the escalating violence. Everything that ought to have been said has been said by the media, by civil society, by everybody, except of course the National Assembly and Bola Tinubu himself and his tiny cycle of supporters, who appear to believe that this is a problem with which we can live.
“Every inch of Nigeria is now vulnerable to insecurity. What else is there? In a civilized democracy, President Bola’s record on insecurity would have cost him his seat a long time ago. So, it’s not too late to say President Bola Tinubu should go. If we project what he’s doing, how he’s performing between now and the elections, we don’t even need to wait.
“Do we need to wait until more and more school children, women, adults and the whole country is overrun by criminality? We took a very responsible, a very measured position in the PRP by saying President Tinubu should resign. There’s nothing wrong, partisan or confrontational in that statement. In a democratic setting, you elect a president to perform two basic tasks: one is to protect the citizens. The other one is to protect the means by which they earn a legitimate living.
“Now, President Tinubu has spectacularly failed to protect anybody. Again, like I said, every part of Nigeria is now vulnerable. Everybody in Nigeria, except maybe if you are that tiny little cycle in the APC, is vulnerable. Children, toddlers in school have been stolen. What else do you say to a president who has failed? ‘Sir, you cannot run this country, so please step down’.
“We say this with all sense of responsibility. President Tinubu should resign. The National Assembly is unlikely to get him to resign, because he’s got it all sewn up. The PRP has taken the lead by saying exactly what needs to be said. We are not safe under President Tinubu. We haven’t been safe under him. And we are likely to be even more exposed to criminality between now and the elections.”
