Amid his growing popularity, Nigerian singer, better known to fans as Winnerman, has explained the reason for his Afro-fusion/Afrobeats style of music.
Born on March 26, 1994, the artiste who hails from Uromi in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, was raised in Benin City.
Ehigie Moses Ikeakhe, in an interview, revealed that he is the ninth of 10 children born to a retired civil servant father and a businesswoman, jovially insinuating he took after his mother as an entrepreneur.
Clarifying his fans’ curiosity about his genre, the entertainer said his exposure and travel across Europe and the United States as a student influenced his Afro-fusion and global appeal.
Winner argued that his style of music combines storytelling with rich melodies and appeals to universal audiences, referencing his hit track, Mon’Ami and 2026 Universe EP.
“Travelling and studying in places like the United States, Russia and the United Kingdom changed my perspective a lot. It exposed me to different cultures, music styles, creative systems and human experiences. My education at Florida International University in Miami, Synergy University in Moscow, and the University of Sunderland in London gave me a broader understanding of both business and global culture. That exposure naturally influenced my music and artistry. It helped me understand that music is a universal language. So while my roots remain African, my sound is designed to connect globally,” Winnerman said.
“My dream is to create timeless African music that can travel across the world while still staying true to our roots and identity. I want my sound to inspire people emotionally, mentally and culturally. My genre is Afro-fusion, a blend of Afrobeat, melody, rhythm, emotion and international influences. I enjoy experimenting with sounds while keeping the African essence alive. The journey has been rewarding because the connection I get from listeners is genuine.
“Songs like Mon’Ami, Give Me Chance, and the entire Winnerman’s Universe EP have shown me that people relate deeply with authentic music. Seeing people sing your songs, connect emotionally to your message and feel inspired is one of the greatest rewards any artist can have.”
He also spoke about the essence of faith in his endeavour, underlining the indispensable in his music career.
“Faith has been my biggest strength, honestly. There are moments in life and business where talent alone is not enough. You need spiritual strength, patience and inner peace. Prayer, belief in God and staying spiritually grounded have helped me through difficult moments. Anytime challenges come, I remind myself that purpose is always bigger than temporary struggles. That mindset keeps me focused and motivated,” Winnerman revealed.
