Denge Josef Onoh, Chairman of the Forum of Former Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly has criticised Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, over his widely circulated video interaction with Peter Obi.
In a statement made available to journalists in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Onoh expressed concern over Omokri’s conduct at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where he approached Obi, exchanged greetings, and recorded the moment. The video was later shared on social media with a caption referencing President Tinubu’s re-election.
Onoh said the development raised questions about the level of decorum expected of individuals nominated for diplomatic roles.
“Mr. Omokri’s actions raise concerns about the level of composure and professionalism expected of a person nominated to represent Nigeria abroad,” Onoh said. “Diplomatic roles require a high degree of restraint and sensitivity in both conduct and public communication.”
He added that while public interactions among political figures are not unusual, the decision to record and share the exchange in a manner open to interpretation could attract mixed reactions.
“What may have been a routine encounter has generated public debate due to how it was presented. Public office holders and nominees are often expected to exercise discretion, particularly in politically sensitive contexts,” he stated.
Onoh further noted that diplomacy requires tact and the ability to rise above partisan considerations, urging greater caution in the use of social media by public officials and nominees.
He called on relevant authorities to continue emphasising standards of conduct for diplomatic appointees, stressing the importance of projecting professionalism and national interest in all engagements.
“Nigeria’s representatives abroad should reflect the country’s values through measured conduct and responsible communication,” he added.
