Nigerian newspapers review: [Registration] Dickson kicks as Ardo vows court action, faults INEC on NDC

Obi slams ‘bizarre’ court order, NDC heads to appeal

In today’s Nigerian newspapers review programme, Today in the News, Vanguard leads with the national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, who urged Nigerians to disregard what he described as propaganda surrounding the party’s registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Another headline features the federal government demanding a thorough and impartial investigation into the deaths of two Nigerians in South Africa, as it moves to fast-track the implementation of a bilateral Early Warning Mechanism to address rising xenophobic tensions and threats against foreign nationals.

Vanguard also reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two Chinese firms for the restart, operation and expansion of the Warri and Port Harcourt refineries.

Moving to the next paper, The Guardian leads with the APC’s growing reliance on consensus candidate selection which is fuelling internal tensions nationwide, as allegations of imposition, sidelined aspirants and regional grievances expose fractures that could undermine party unity and electoral prospects ahead of 2027.

Next paper, The Punch’s lead headline states that no fewer than 10 state governors and ex-governors are actively working to replace incumbent senators ahead of the 2027 general elections, in a sweeping political realignment reshaping Nigeria’s legislative landscape.

Lastly, The Nation leads with the complexion of the nation’s political milieu which has changed again ahead of the 2027 elections, with the opposition becoming fragmented despite last week’s pledge in Ibadan to work together and present a single presidential candidate against President Bola Tinubu in the January 16 poll.
