Enugu APC denies issuing LG primary election notice

By Anayo Okoli

ENUGU — The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has dismissed a circulating document purportedly announcing the conduct of primary elections for Local Government polls, describing it as unauthorised and not issued by the party leadership.

The party said it had not released any official notice for the conduct of Local Government elections or primaries in the state, and urged members of the public to disregard the document in circulation.

In a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson in the state, Chief Hon. Uche Obute (JP), the APC said the document did not emanate from the recognised leadership of the party in Enugu State.

According to him, only the duly constituted State Executive Committee, as recognised by the National Working Committee (NWC), has the authority to issue notices or organise primary elections on behalf of the party.

He described the circulating notice as “unauthorised, misleading, and of no legal effect.”

“The attention of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Enugu State Chapter, has been drawn to a document currently in circulation titled notification of conduct of primaries for Local Government Elections in 17 LGAs and 260 Councillorship Wards, purportedly issued in the name of the party,” the statement read.

Obute stated that the individuals associated with the document were not authorised by the party’s national or state leadership structures to issue such notification or conduct primaries.

He added that any process undertaken on the basis of the said notice would not be recognised by the party or any lawful authority.

The party further advised members, aspirants, stakeholders, and the public to disregard the publication and avoid participation in any related activity.

It also disclosed that it had commenced appropriate administrative and legal steps, including notifying the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) and relevant security agencies, to prevent any actions based on the disputed document.

The APC assured that official guidelines and timetables for primaries would be communicated through recognised party channels in due course.
