Edo APC aspirant cites NASS experience, seeks ticket

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Edo South senatorial aspirant, Omorege Ogbeide-Ihama, has said his eight-year experience in the House of Representatives positions him strongly to secure the party’s ticket for the 2027 elections.

Speaking in Benin City, Ogbeide-Ihama stressed that legislative experience is critical for effective performance in the Senate, noting that lawmaking requires both political skill and institutional knowledge.

“The business of lawmaking is serious. You must understand the politics of the environment and be able to lobby to get your bills and motions considered,” he said.

The former lawmaker added that his track record in the National Assembly, including facilitating projects and attracting key officials to his constituency, demonstrates his understanding of the legislative process.

Reacting to reports that he had sought the support of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to secure the APC ticket, Ogbeide-Ihama said there was nothing wrong with seeking political backing.

“If it is true, there is nothing bad in meeting people for support. Everyone needs help, and if such engagement guarantees the ticket, so be it,” he said.

He urged party leaders in Edo South to prioritise competence and experience over sentiments, insisting that unity across the district’s seven local government areas should be maintained.

“We are one people. Nobody should use sentiment to divide us,” he added.

Earlier, a leader of the APC in Edo South and former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Pius Odubu, described the contest as a “family affair,” noting that although many aspirants are in the race, only one candidate will eventually emerge.

Odubu advised Ogbeide-Ihama to conduct his campaign peacefully as the party prepares for the selection process.
