‎Health advocacy organisation, Dementia Africa, has announced plans to commemorate the 2026 Dementia Week with a major awareness walk aimed at promoting public understanding of dementia and advocating improved support systems for affected persons and caregivers.

‎‎The awareness walk is scheduled to hold on Monday, May 25, 2026, and will commence at 8:00 a.m. within the vicinity of the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja.

‎‎According to the organisers, the event is designed to raise awareness about dementia, encourage early diagnosis, reduce stigma associated with the condition, and strengthen advocacy for better healthcare policies and support structures across Nigeria and Africa.

‎‎Speaking on the significance of the event, Dr. Oma Iyoko, International Coordinator of Dementia Africa and a specialist in Psychological Therapies and Mental Health in the United Kingdom, stressed the need for collective action in addressing the growing challenges posed by dementia.

‎‎She described dementia as one of the most misunderstood and neglected health conditions despite its increasing impact on individuals, families, caregivers, and healthcare systems globally.

‎‎According to her, the awareness walk will serve as a platform to educate the public, promote compassion and inclusion, and amplify calls for improved mental healthcare delivery.

‎‎“The awareness walk is not just a procession; it is a call for compassion, inclusion, advocacy, and action. It is an opportunity for all stakeholders to unite in support of improved mental healthcare delivery and a better quality of life for people living with dementia,” she stated.

‎‎The symbolic procession is expected to attract healthcare professionals, civil society groups, students, policymakers, development partners, caregivers, media organisations, and members of the public.

‎‎Organisers noted that the event would further reinforce collective efforts towards promoting mental health awareness and strengthening healthcare delivery systems in Nigeria.

‎‎Dementia Africa therefore called on Nigerians and relevant stakeholders to participate in the exercise and support ongoing campaigns for awareness, dignity, care, and support for people living with dementia.

‎‎The organisation added that the campaign seeks to break the silence surrounding dementia, challenge societal stigma, and build a more compassionate society for persons affected by the condition.
