2027: Gbemileke Alagbe emerges ADC governorship candidate in Oyo

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has elected Gbemileke Alagbe, a 40-year-old banker and doctorate degree holder, as its governorship candidate for the forthcoming election in Oyo State.

Alagbe emerged victorious after a keenly contested primary election conducted by the party, defeating four other aspirants to clinch the ticket.

The exercise recorded a total of 21,600 votes cast by delegates, with Alagbe polling 15,107 votes to secure a decisive victory.

His closest challenger, Niyi Aborisade, scored 4,307 votes, while Adegboyega Taofeeq Adegoke polled 987 votes.

Other contestants included Azeez Adeduntan, who garnered 500 votes, and Oyebisi Lukmon Ilaka, who received 90 votes.

The outcome confirmed Alagbe’s wide support within the party structure ahead of the governorship election expected to shape the political landscape of Oyo State in 2027.

Speaking after his emergence, Alagbe described the victory as a mandate for purposeful leadership, accountability, and inclusive governance.

“This is not just my victory; it is a collective decision by our party members who believe in a new direction for Oyo State,” he said.

“I am committed to building a government that prioritises accountability, economic growth, and opportunities for young people.”

Alagbe also stressed the need for competence-driven leadership, noting that governance requires discipline, expertise, and a clear understanding of systems and economic management.

“Leadership today requires more than political rhetoric. It demands experience, discipline, and a clear understanding of how systems work. My background in banking and finance has prepared me for this responsibility,” he added.

Popularly known among supporters as “Eleniyan,” Alagbe is recognised within professional circles for his banking career and academic accomplishments.

Political observers say his emergence reflects a growing trend of professionals transitioning from the private sector into partisan politics, as voters increasingly place emphasis on competence, policy direction, and track record.

Analysts also believe his academic and professional background could appeal strongly to younger and urban voters seeking reforms in governance, infrastructure, and economic management.

His candidacy is expected to intensify political engagement in Oyo State ahead of the general elections, particularly around issues of leadership quality, accountability, and development priorities.
