ABUJA — A frontline governorship aspirant on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in Enugu State, Ray Kene Ogbodo, says growing public frustration over economic hardship and governance in the state is creating a strong appetite for political change ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

His entry into the race comes as political activity gradually intensifies in Enugu, with aspirants beginning early consultations and positioning themselves for what is expected to become a fiercely contested battle over the state’s political direction after years of mounting voter dissatisfaction.

Ogbodo, a United Kingdom-based strategy, management and leadership expert, spoke at the weekend while addressing journalists shortly after formally declaring his interest in the governorship race.

“Enugu people are obviously tired of the current order and are eagerly waiting for a credible alternative. This is why I am upbeat that the party leadership will provide an avenue for that,” he said.

He said the credibility of the NDC’s governorship primary would play a decisive role in determining the party’s chances in the 2027 election, warning that voters were becoming increasingly impatient with imposition and backroom political arrangements.

According to him, “The choice of candidate through a credible process is a sure way towards guaranteeing victory for the party in the 2027 election.”

Ogbodo said his decision to join the race was driven by concerns over worsening hardship, poor governance and what he described as the widening disconnect between political leaders and ordinary residents across the state.

He stated, “I am coming with new ideas, fresh energy and a genuine commitment to serve our people with compassion, integrity, accountability and transparency.

“I am driven by the desire to contribute meaningfully to the development and growth of Enugu State and to ensure that our people are liberated from oppressors and out-of-touch politicians so they can start living well as they rightfully deserve.”

Attempting to frame his campaign around governance and economic recovery, Ogbodo said his priorities would include ethical leadership, economic empowerment, youth development, security, quality education and people-centred governance.

“Enugu State deserves a purposeful, inclusive and people-oriented government. A government that prioritises the needs of the people, promotes youth and women participation, supports communities and strengthens opportunities for growth, development and empowerment,” he said.

He described his governorship ambition as a broader effort to rebuild public confidence in leadership at a time many residents feel alienated from the political class.

“This mission is not about me; it is about us. It is about building a better future, restoring confidence in leadership and delivering real results that will positively impact our lives,” Ogbodo added.

He also appealed for support and collaboration from residents and stakeholders, saying meaningful change in the state would require collective commitment, accountable leadership and a government more connected to the realities facing ordinary people.
