Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe has called for decency, unity and issue-based politics as he signalled the start of his re-election campaign in Cross River North.
In a message titled “A Piece of My Thoughts,” the lawmaker urged supporters and political actors to avoid insults, personal attacks and divisive rhetoric, despite the rising political tension in the district.
Addressing constituents, Jarigbe expressed appreciation for their continued support and outlined the tone he expects for the campaign.
“My dear people of Cross River North, as we embark on this re-election journey, I thank you for your unwavering support. I must speak plainly about the path we must take,” he said.
Acknowledging the presence of strong contenders, including former governor Senator Ben Ayade, Jarigbe cautioned against mudslinging.
“I am aware that emotions run high. Our opponents are formidable. But I charge you: no insults, no personal attacks, no abusive language. Our campaign must be defined by ideas, not insults,” he stated.
The senator also stressed the need to respect public offices, particularly the office of the governor, irrespective of differing views on performance.
“Whether serving or former, that office commands our collective respect. Let us critique records, not abuse individuals,” he added.
Jarigbe further urged stakeholders to uphold shared values and maintain decorum throughout the political process.
“Let us pursue a healthy contest that reflects our upbringing. In the end, what endures is character, community and how we treat one another,” he said.
He also advised aspirants to remain responsive to public opinion, noting the importance of listening to constituents.
Finally, the senator emphasised party unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning against divisions that could persist after the primaries.
“We remain one united APC family. After the votes are counted, we will still need one another. No ambition is worth destroying our shared bond,” he said.
He concluded with a call for responsible engagement: “Campaign with passion, but with honour.”
