Renewal of pipeline surveillance agreement: It’ll secure oil infrastructure in N-Delta

By Dapo Akinrefon

The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has supported the Federal Government’s renewal of pipeline surveillance contract with Tantita Security, stating that the decision would sustain ongoing efforts to secure oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta.

The group, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Mr Israel Uwejeyan, said its position followed an evaluation of developments recorded since the commencement of the surveillance arrangement.

The group said the contract had contributed to a reduction in pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft and environmental damage in the region, noting that these challenges had previously affected oil production and national revenue.

According to the NDYC, the surveillance structure incorporates intelligence gathering, community participation and response mechanisms that involve host communities in the protection of oil facilities.
It added that the arrangement has created economic opportunities for residents while discouraging illegal bunkering activities.

The organisation cautioned against any disruption to the existing framework, warning that changes at this stage could affect security around oil installations and reverse recent progress recorded in the region.
The NDYC also addressed ongoing calls from some quarters for a review of the contract, urging stakeholders to pursue approaches that support stability and continuity in the Niger Delta.

It called on the Federal Government to renew the pipeline surveillance contract with Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, stating that continuity would consolidate gains made in safeguarding oil infrastructure.

“The Niger Delta cannot afford a relapse into the dark days of unchecked oil bunkering and environmental abuse. The cost, economically, socially, and environmentally, is far too great.

“We, therefore, urge all stakeholders, including dissenting voices, to channel their energies into innovative, lawful, and development-oriented ventures that contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the region. The Niger Delta is replete with untapped opportunities across sectors, and it is through creativity, enterprise, and collaboration, not disruption, that sustainable prosperity will be achieved.”
