Osogbo — Civil society organisations in Osun State have called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to strengthen emergency response mechanisms following a rainstorm that affected parts of the state.
The coalition, The Osun Masterminds (TOM), made the call in its monthly address, expressing concern over the impact of the storm and the need for proactive measures as the rainy season intensifies.
Speaking with journalists in Osogbo, the group’s Executive Director, Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, emphasised the importance of improved disaster preparedness and response systems to reduce risks to lives and property.
He urged stakeholders across political divides to avoid politicising natural disasters, noting that government has a responsibility to protect citizens and mitigate the effects of such incidents.
“We advocate the strengthening of the state’s emergency response capacity to ensure that victims of natural disasters receive timely assistance and support,” he said.
Oyedokun-Alli also called for enhanced meteorological data management and effective dissemination of weather information to residents through available media channels.
He further recommended the clearing of waterways to reduce the risk of flooding, as well as a review of public infrastructure, including solar streetlights and billboard installations, to ensure safety standards are met.
The recent rainstorm affected Osogbo, Ede and other communities, resulting in fatalities, injuries and damage to property.
