PORT HARCOURT – The Palace of the Amanyanabo of Okochiri Kingdom, His Majesty, Ateke Michael Tom, has affirmed the King’s right to participate in discussions relating to pipeline surveillance and other development issues in the Niger Delta.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the King’s Special Assistant on Media, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, the palace said the monarch has long-standing involvement in regional development and remains committed to promoting peace, dialogue, and progress across the Niger Delta.
The statement followed remarks by former President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Udengs Eradiri, concerning a recent meeting of former Niger Delta agitators at the Okochiri Palace to discuss pipeline surveillance contracts.
The palace clarified that such meetings are intended to provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss issues affecting the region and should not be interpreted as political endorsements or opposition.
“The Okochiri Palace remains a neutral institution dedicated to fostering dialogue, peace, and development in the Niger Delta,” the statement said.
It added that King Ateke, as a traditional ruler, engages with diverse perspectives to encourage constructive discussions and support community advancement.
The palace reaffirmed its commitment to being an open platform for well-meaning individuals and groups seeking dialogue and constructive engagement on matters of regional importance.
It concluded by urging all parties to respect the institution of the monarchy and focus on collaborative efforts that promote the welfare and development of the Niger Delta.
