A Niger Delta-based advocacy group, the Goodluck Jonathan Legacy Project (GJLP), has responded to recent comments by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, on the administration of former President, Goodluck Jonathan, describing them as inaccurate and open to debate.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the group’s National Coordinator, Hon. Engr. Juan Amechee Governor, disagreed with Atiku’s suggestion that governance challenges during Jonathan’s tenure were due to “inexperience.”
According to the group, Jonathan’s progression through public offices — including deputy governor, governor, vice president, and president — reflects a breadth of experience in governance.
The statement argued that assessments of past administrations should consider the full context of leadership records and policy outcomes.
Highlighting aspects of Jonathan’s tenure, the group referenced economic indicators during the period, including Nigeria’s rebased GDP status as Africa’s largest economy, foreign investment inflows, and efforts in agricultural reforms.
It also pointed to Nigeria’s participation in international institutions and progress on development targets during that administration.
On democratic governance, the group noted Jonathan’s concession following the 2015 presidential election, describing it as a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The GJLP maintained that differing perspectives on past leadership should be grounded in verifiable records and constructive engagement.
The exchange reflects ongoing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders offering varied interpretations of previous administrations.
