LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transitioning public infrastructure to renewable energy, with plans to deploy solar power systems across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

This follows the commissioning of a 150 KVA outdoor solar power system at Radio Lagos and Eko FM, replacing diesel generators to provide clean and stable electricity.

Speaking at the launch, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described the project as transformative, noting that it would enhance access to reliable and sustainable energy while reducing operational costs.

“With the high cost of diesel and public electricity, the state government is moving its public facilities, including street lighting, to solar energy,” he said, adding that the initiative aligns with efforts to build smarter and more sustainable infrastructure.

Omotoso urged the management of the stations to maximise the system to bridge electricity gaps and support the transition to clean energy.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Abiodun Ogunleye, said the project would ensure stable power supply for critical communication systems while maintaining high service standards.

Earlier, the General Manager of Radio Lagos and Eko FM, Jide Lawal, said the installation marks a new era of energy independence and uninterrupted broadcasting. He noted that the switch to renewable energy would reduce carbon emissions, cut operational costs, and improve service delivery.

Lawal commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for supporting the initiative.

The project contractor, Mr. Tayo Ogidan, said the solar plant has the capacity to generate 150 kilowatts of electricity, ensuring uninterrupted operations for the stations.
