There was a notable political development in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, as an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Prince Haliru Dantsoho Mahmud, announced his withdrawal from the race shortly after declaring his intention to contest, expressing support for fellow aspirant Ambassador Yahaya Seriki Gambari.
Mahmud, who hails from Kwara North Senatorial District, made the announcement at an event centre along the old Offa Road, GRA, Ilorin, where APC leaders, supporters, and stakeholders were present.
He explained that his decision followed consultations with political associates and supporters, describing it as a step taken in the interest of party unity and collective progress.
“I have aspired like any other qualified political office seeker, but after due consultations with people that matter, including my supporters, I have decided to step aside,” he said.
Mahmud said his support for Seriki was informed by the need for unity within the party and the pursuit of broader consensus ahead of future elections.
“Right now, our state needs a unifier—someone who can bring people together and strengthen cohesion. My decision is in the interest of unity and progress,” he stated.
He noted that while the agitation for greater inclusion of Kwara North in the state’s political leadership remains valid, the present moment requires consolidation rather than division.
“For many years, Kwara North has remained a strong pillar in the state’s political structure. The call for inclusion is still important, but leadership choices must also reflect unity at critical times,” he said.
Mahmud described Ambassador Yahaya Seriki Gambari as a figure capable of building bridges across political and community divides, adding that his experience in grassroots engagement and party mobilisation made him a strong contender.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, alongside security agencies, for their response to recent security challenges in parts of the state, while urging continued efforts to support affected communities.
The event ended with calls from party supporters for cohesion within the APC as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Kwara State.
