The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIW, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take urgent and decisive steps to address the country’s worsening security challenges following renewed attacks in the North-East.
In a press statement issued Friday, the group expressed concern over recent deadly incidents linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, including reports of casualties among military personnel in Borno State.
HURIWA said the developments highlight the need to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and improve operational effectiveness in the fight against insurgency.
“The recent incidents underscore the urgency of reinforcing military capacity and ensuring more proactive strategies to safeguard lives and property,” the group stated.
While noting official accounts that some attacks were repelled, HURIWA called for greater transparency and timely communication to address conflicting reports and build public confidence.
The association observed that Nigeria continues to face complex security threats, including terrorism, banditry and communal violence, with significant humanitarian consequences.
Citing data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), HURIWA noted the scale of violence recorded in recent years. It also referenced findings from the Global Terrorism Index by the Institute for Economics and Peace, which highlight ongoing security concerns in Nigeria.
According to the group, recurring attacks across several states point to the need for enhanced coordination among security agencies and more robust intelligence gathering.
“These patterns call for sustained reforms and a comprehensive, results-oriented approach to national security,” it said.
HURIWA also stressed the importance of prioritising the welfare and morale of security personnel, noting that improved support systems are critical to operational success.
The group urged the Federal Government to review and strengthen existing strategies, including leadership structures within the security sector, to ensure greater efficiency and accountability.
It further called for constructive civic engagement, encouraging citizens and institutions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress, to support lawful and peaceful efforts aimed at promoting accountability and national security.
HURIWA also referenced international travel advisories, including those issued by the United States Department of State, noting that such developments underscore global attention on Nigeria’s security situation and the importance of sustained improvements.
“Addressing insecurity requires coordinated action, transparency, and a clear demonstration of commitment to protecting citizens,” the statement added.
The association called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security framework, including improved intelligence-sharing, better-equipped forces and clearly defined counterterrorism strategies.
HURIWA further emphasised the need for swift and effective measures to restore public confidence and ensure lasting peace.
