Lagos — The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, has called on government at all levels to prioritise the protection of lives and welfare of citizens, urging greater focus on security and national well-being.

In his Easter message, the cleric expressed concern over recent security challenges in parts of the country and encouraged renewed efforts to address them. He emphasised the need for policies and actions that place citizens’ safety and dignity at the forefront.

The message, issued on his behalf by the Archdiocesan Director of Social Communications, Anthony Godonu, noted that this year’s Easter is being observed amid broader national concerns, including economic pressures and security issues.

Martins urged leaders to ensure that governance decisions are guided by the common good, stressing that public office carries a responsibility to protect lives and promote stability.

“We call on government at all levels to prioritise human lives in policy formulation and implementation, ensuring that security, welfare, and national unity remain key considerations,” the statement said.

He also encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and supportive of efforts aimed at maintaining peace and security in their communities.

On the economy, the Archbishop highlighted the impact of rising costs of living on households, noting the need for policies that ease hardship and support vulnerable groups.

He further called on leaders to demonstrate commitment and accountability in public service, adding that effective leadership requires responsiveness to the needs of the people.

The cleric also urged Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process by supporting leaders who demonstrate integrity and a commitment to national development.

The Easter message reflects on the significance of the season, which commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and calls for renewed commitment to values of sacrifice, responsibility, and service to others.
