Easter: Northern Christian Association decries persistent attacks during holy season

By Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

The Forum of Northern Christians, also known as the Northern Christian Association (NCA), has decried what it described as persistent attacks across Northern Nigeria, warning that the trend is casting a shadow over Easter celebrations and other Christian holy observances.

The group expressed concern over recent attacks in Jos, Plateau State, and parts of Kaduna State on Palm Sunday, where several lives were reportedly lost in violent incidents.

In a statement to mark the Easter celebration, signed by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, and Secretary General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, the Forum lamented that many communities are marking the season in grief rather than joy.
According to the NCA, the attacks, particularly in Jos North, have left families bereaved and many residents displaced at a time when Christians are preparing for Easter.

“The situation has turned what should be a period of spiritual reflection and celebration into one overshadowed by fear, uncertainty and recurring violence,” the statement read.
The Forum noted that the security challenges extend beyond Plateau, citing continued incidents in Benue State, Borno State, Niger State and Taraba State, where killings, abductions and displacement persist.

It further expressed concern over what it described as a recurring pattern of attacks during Christian holy periods, raising questions about the effectiveness of security arrangements and the ability of authorities to protect citizens during critical times.

The NCA warned that the continued violence risks becoming normalized, deepening the suffering of affected communities and eroding public confidence in government’s capacity to ensure safety.

The group called on the Federal Government and security agencies to go beyond routine condemnations by adopting more decisive, sustained and strategic measures to end the cycle of violence and bring perpetrators to justice.

It also urged religious, traditional and community leaders to intensify efforts toward promoting unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence across the region.
Despite the prevailing challenges, the Forum said the Easter message remains one of hope and renewal, urging Christians to remain steadfast in faith and not succumb to fear.

The NCA reaffirmed its call for a Northern Nigeria where citizens of all faiths can live, worship and celebrate freely without fear, while emphasizing the need for renewed commitment to peace, justice and security.
