Carloha Nigeria, the authorized distributor and assembler of Chery vehicles in the Nigeria, has reinforced its commitment to staff development with the successful staging of the Chery Emerging Leaders Football Tournament in Lagos.

The initiative reflects the company’s innovative approach to employee engagement by combining sportsmanship with leadership development.
The tournament, designed to identify, nurture, and prepare future leaders within the organization, featured an exciting contest between the company’s workshop and showroom teams, drawing participation and support from employees across several departments.
The match, played on Saturday, April 4, ended in a closely contested 1–1 draw at regulation time. The game was eventually decided through a penalty shootout, where Team A scored five goals while Team B recorded four goals, with Team A emerging victorious with a 5–4 win on penalties to lift the tournament trophy.
The event attracted a wide audience, including the Chief Executive Officer of Carloha Nigeria, Mr. Liang Long, members of management, staff, and representatives of the media.
Speaking after the match, the General Manager, Marketing, Mr. Taiwo Akinpelu, described the tournament as more than a recreational activity, noting that it serves as a deliberate investment in human capital development.
According to him, Carloha Nigeria is committed to cultivating a new generation of leaders by equipping employees with essential interpersonal, leadership, and teamwork skills.
“Our goal is to nurture future leaders within the organization by empowering them with the skills required not only for professional excellence but also for effective collaboration and leadership,” Akinpelu said.
He explained that football was intentionally chosen as the platform for the initiative because of its unifying influence both in Nigeria and globally.
“Football has a unique ability to bring people together across cultures, departments, and organizational hierarchies. It creates a level playing field where individuals can connect, compete, and collaborate. That is exactly the kind of environment we strive to build within our organization,” he added.
Akinpelu further noted that the tournament provided an opportunity for employees from various units—including the showroom, warehouse, and workshop teams—to interact outside the formal work environment, thereby strengthening internal relationships and fostering a stronger sense of unity.
He also highlighted the inclusive culture within the organization, pointing out that the CEO actively participated in the game earlier in the day, demonstrating leadership by example and reinforcing the company’s team-oriented values.
Beyond promoting camaraderie, the event encouraged healthy competition, resilience, and teamwork—qualities Carloha Nigeria considers essential for effective leadership and organizational growth.
The marketing chief revealed that the tournament is designed as an annual event, strategically scheduled around April, a period he described as symbolic of renewal and new beginnings.
“This season represents renewal and fresh opportunities. It coincides with the onset of the rainy season and, this year, aligns with both Ramadan and Easter—periods that encourage reflection and rejuvenation. It is therefore an ideal time to re-energize our team and prepare for the challenges ahead,” he explained.
Following the success of this year’s edition, Carloha Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening staff engagement and leadership development through innovative initiatives that promote teamwork and drive corporate growth from within.
