Calls for INEC chairman’s resignation premature – Oluwafemi

A public analyst and development consultant, Oluwafemi, has described calls for the resignation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, as premature, urging adherence to due process.

In a statement he signed, Oluwafemi said while accountability is vital, demands for resignation must be based on verifiable breaches and not political pressure or public agitation.

He warned that recent positions by groups such as the African Democratic Congress and the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria could set a precedent where leadership of key institutions is influenced outside constitutional procedures.

According to him, Nigeria’s laws clearly define how an INEC chairman can be removed, stressing that grievances should be subjected to judicial scrutiny rather than media campaigns.

Oluwafemi also cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric, noting that irresponsible public commentary could heighten political tensions and undermine trust in institutions.

He urged political actors, socio-religious groups and media commentators to exercise restraint and promote responsible discourse.

“This is not a defence of any individual, but of due process and democratic stability. Where there is credible evidence, it must be tested through lawful channels,” he said.

He added that calls for resignation remain premature until constitutional processes are followed.
