The Kaduna State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has postponed its state, local government, and polling unit congresses earlier scheduled for April 7, 2026.
The decision, according to the State Chairman, Ahmed Tijjani Mustapha, follows a recent wave of high-profile defections into the party.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party said the postponement was necessary to ensure fairness, inclusivity, and proper representation of new members joining its ranks.
The ADC disclosed that prominent political figures, including Isa Mohammed Ashiru, a three-time governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had recently defected to the party.
Others, it said, include a serving senator, Khalid Soba, former senator Danjuma La’ah, as well as four members of the National Assembly and four members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, among others from the PDP, APC, NNPP, and Labour Party.
The party leadership noted that conducting the congresses as scheduled would not adequately reflect its growing strength and evolving structure in the state.
“The State Executive Committee believes that proceeding with the congresses at this time would be premature and may undermine the principles of equity, fairness, and internal democracy,” the statement said.
It added that the congresses have now been rescheduled to hold in the first week of May 2026, ahead of the expiration of the current leadership’s tenure on May 12, 2026.
The party also disclosed that its decision had been communicated to the national headquarters.
While apologising for any inconvenience caused by the postponement, the ADC urged members across the state to remain patient and committed as it works to accommodate all stakeholders in the forthcoming congresses.
