Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has declared that he would serve a single four-year term if elected Governor of Enugu State in the 2027 general elections.

Nnaji, popularly known as Nwakibie, made the declaration during a consultative meeting with political supporters and grassroots mobilisers from across the state.

The session, attended by party leaders, youth groups, women organisations, professionals and other stakeholders, focused on his leadership philosophy and development vision for Enugu State.

Speaking at the event, Nnaji said his one-term pledge was rooted in his commitment to the state’s zoning arrangement, which he noted has helped sustain political balance and unity.

“I want to state this clearly: I will serve only one term of four years if elected governor in 2027,” he said.

“This decision is deliberate and based on my respect for the zoning structure in Enugu State, which has promoted fairness and stability. By 2031, Enugu West Senatorial District should produce the next governor, and I have no intention of disrupting that process.”

He emphasised that leadership should be guided by equity, fairness and long-term stability rather than personal ambition.

Nnaji also expressed confidence in his ability to deliver within a single term, citing his background in business and entrepreneurship.

“With over 30 years’ experience as an entrepreneur, I am well positioned to deliver meaningful results within four years. That is sufficient time to lay a solid foundation for economic transformation,” he said.

He outlined key sectors for development, including solid minerals, agriculture, human capital development, tourism and industrial expansion, noting that these areas remain largely underutilised.

“Enugu State is endowed with significant economic potential. My focus will be on harnessing these resources to create jobs, boost internally generated revenue and grow the economy without imposing additional tax burdens,” he said.

Reflecting on his time as minister, Nnaji said he improved the performance of the ministry during his tenure, attributing the progress to effective leadership and clear vision.

He also stressed the importance of continuity, stating that he would support the emergence of a capable successor from Enugu West to sustain development efforts beyond his tenure.

“I am not only focused on four years but on the long-term future of Enugu State. By 2031, leadership should transition in line with the zoning arrangement to ensure continuity,” he added.

To illustrate that impactful governance is not dependent on long tenure, Nnaji referenced the achievements of former governor of old Anambra State, Jim Nwobodo, noting that significant progress can be made within a short period.

He concluded by assuring supporters of his commitment to delivering lasting development and urged them to remain united in pursuit of a prosperous Enugu State.
