2027: Constituents demand rotation in Ikorodu Federal Constituency

By Emem Idio

Political discussions are heating up in Ikorodu Federal Constituency as stakeholders and residents call for the principle of rotation in the choice of who represents the area in the House of Representatives in 2027.

Hon. Babajimi Benson has represented the constituency since 2015, winning elections in 2015, 2019, and 2023. However, growing voices within the constituency are advocating for power to rotate after nearly 12 years of continuous representation by the same lawmaker.

Many residents and stakeholders argue that it is time to allow other qualified individuals from different parts of the constituency to serve, emphasising the need for fairness, inclusiveness, and rotational leadership.

A strong position has also emerged that after several electoral cycles dominated by Ikorodu Constituency 2, it is now the turn of Ikorodu Constituency 1 to produce the next representative in the interest of equity and balance.

Within the All Progressives Congress (APC), there are also calls for internal zoning balance, with some members suggesting it is the turn of the Justice Forum to produce a candidate after years of dominance by the Mandate Group.

Some voices have further called for religious balance in leadership, while others insist that competence, experience, and performance should remain the primary criteria for selection.

The Lagos State Chairman of the APC, Cornelius Ojelabi, has reassured party members that the APC remains committed to internal democracy and will conduct open primaries without imposition of candidates.
