The Vice-Chancellor of University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), has described journalists in Kwara State as key partners in projecting the achievements of the institution.

Egbewole made the remark while hosting members of the media and other stakeholders to the university’s annual Iftar at the Vice-Chancellor’s Lodge in Ilorin.

He stressed that sustained collaboration between the university and the media remains vital to promoting the institution’s progress and reputation.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed appreciation to journalists for what he described as their continued support and constructive engagement with the university over the years.

According to him, the role of the media has been instrumental in sustaining the growth and public image of the institution.

“Members of the press are critical stakeholders in our progress. Your continuous support and professional engagement have contributed immensely to the reputation and development of this university,” Egbewole said.

He noted that the relationship between the university management and the media had strengthened over time, adding that engagements such as the annual Iftar would further deepen understanding and cooperation.

Egbewole also commended journalists for honouring the invitation despite their demanding schedules, noting that their presence reflected a shared commitment to maintaining a cordial partnership with the institution.

“This gathering provides us with a moment to reflect, appreciate one another and strengthen the bond that exists between the university and the media during this sacred period,” he added.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that the annual Iftar would continue to serve as a platform for fostering unity among stakeholders and strengthening relationships within the university community.

In a sermon delivered at the event, the Deputy Chief Imam of the university, Prof. Musa Sidiq Abdullahi, highlighted the spiritual significance of fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Abdullahi, who delivered the message on behalf of the Chief Imam of the university, Prof. Nasir AbdusSalam, said fasting was ordained to help believers attain piety and deepen their faith.

“Fasting is not merely about abstaining from food and drink; it is a period for self-discipline, increased prayers, recitation of the Holy Qur’an and seeking forgiveness,” he said.

He urged Muslims to use the fasting period to reflect on their spiritual growth and evaluate whether their devotion and acts of worship had strengthened their faith.

The cleric also encouraged the faithful to maximise the last 10 days of Ramadan by increasing supplications and participating more in night prayers.

He further advised Muslims to reduce distractions, particularly excessive use of social media, and devote more time to spiritual activities in order to gain the full rewards of the holy month.

Special prayers were later offered for Nigeria, Kwara State and the university community, with participants seeking peace, progress and continued prosperity for the nation and the institution.

The gathering, held as part of activities marking Ramadan, attracted principal officers of the university, representatives of staff unions, international students and other members of the university community.
