Kadpoly Alumnus defends student over dress code controversy

By Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

A Mass Communication alumnus of Kaduna Polytechnic, Okpani Austine Agbo Emmanuel, has defended a student who recently raised concerns over the alleged overzealous enforcement of the institution’s dress code, describing her action as courageous and necessary.

In a statement, Emmanuel said the student had done the institution “a great favour” by drawing public attention to concerns that some students may have experienced but lacked the courage or opportunity to express.

According to him, in a democratic society, peaceful expressions of concern or protest serve as legitimate avenues through which citizens and members of a community can highlight grievances and call for reforms.

He noted that issues relating to the enforcement of institutional policies should be open to scrutiny to ensure that disciplinary measures are applied fairly and in a manner that respects the rights and dignity of students.

“By bringing the matter to public attention, the student has opened the door for necessary reflection on how such policies are enforced within an institution of repute like Kaduna Polytechnic,” he stated.

The media professional also urged the management of the polytechnic to make public the outcome of any internal review or disciplinary process concerning the incident.

According to him, such transparency would reassure the public that concerns raised by students are being addressed and that institutional procedures are being applied fairly.

Emmanuel further advised the institution to approach the matter with caution and sensitivity, warning that any action perceived as punitive towards the students involved could heighten public concern and escalate tensions.

He appealed to the management and relevant authorities of the polytechnic to handle the situation through transparency and dialogue in order to protect the institution’s reputation and maintain confidence among students and the wider public.
