Ibadan Tanker Tragedy: PDP chieftain urges Makinde to enforce street trading ban

By Adeola Badru

IBADAN — A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has called on Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to strictly enforce the ban on street trading following a deadly tanker accident in Ibadan that claimed at least six lives and injured several others.

The accident occurred on Tuesday when a trailer carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit lost control at the Fruits Market along the Oje–Beere route, an area known for heavy commercial activity and roadside trading. Reports indicate the trailer ran over several tricycles, killing six people, including a motorcyclist, while many others sustained injuries.

In a statement on Wednesday, Ajadi extended condolences to the families of the victims and sympathised with the Oyo State Government over the tragedy, praying that such an incident does not recur. He commended the prompt response of security personnel and emergency rescue officials who attended to the victims.

Ajadi lamented that despite ongoing efforts by state and local authorities to discourage street trading, public disregard for the directive continues, noting that “it is sad that most of the victims are people buying and selling on the streets.” He urged the government to enforce the ban more strictly to prevent further loss of lives.

He prayed for the repose of the departed and a speedy recovery for those injured in the crash.
