ENUGU — The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has hailed renowned legal scholar and human rights activist, Prof. Joy Ezeilo, SAN, as an “icon whose life reflects courage and service” during her 60th birthday celebrations in Enugu.
Represented by the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Patrick Ubru, Governor Mbah praised Ezeilo’s distinguished career, highlighting her tenure as United Nations Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons and her role as founder of the Women’s Aid Collective (WACOL), which provides support for abused women and vulnerable groups. “Her life is a testament to service and sacrifice,” he said, noting that Ezeilo consistently chose justice over comfort and humanity over silence.
Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, described Ezeilo as a rare personality whose impact transcends borders, emphasizing her lifelong dedication to scholarship, activism, and humanity. “She has become a garment for many, wrapping the poor, the violated, and the voiceless in the warmth of her advocacy,” Ezekwesili remarked.
Representing the Vice President of Malawi, Jane Ansah, Janet Ansah commended Ezeilo for transforming lives and strengthening institutions through her advocacy for human and women’s rights. “Her legacy shines in the minds she has shaped and the hope she has inspired. She remains a beacon for all who believe in justice,” she said.
Chairman of the occasion, R.A. Lawal-Rabana, SAN, described Ezeilo as a globally respected scholar whose achievements span academia, legal practice, and public service, noting that her status as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, professor of law, and Life Bencher reflects both intellectual integrity and excellence. Similarly, Nigerian Bar Association President Afam Osigwe praised her advocacy for vulnerable populations.
Prof. Ezeilo expressed gratitude to attendees from across the globe, describing herself as “joyful and blessed.” She also presented her autobiography, Joy Ngozi Ezeilo: From Local to Global, A Woman on a Mission, chronicling her journey from early life to global advocacy.
The grand celebration, held at Amadeo Event Centre, featured awards, book presentations, panel discussions, drama, and cultural performances, attracting dignitaries from Nigeria and the international community.
