The Lady Captain of the Ladies Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938, Mrs. Annie Eimiakhena, has unveiled “Enjoy Life, Enjoy Golf, Impact Lives” as the theme that will guide the section’s activities for the year, promising a blend of recreational golfing, social engagement and community impact.
Eimiakhena disclosed this on Tuesday during the inaugural kitty organised to formally mark the commencement of her tenure as Lady Captain.
Speaking at the event, she explained that the gathering was primarily to welcome her into office and set the tone for the programmes lined up for the year.
“Our theme for this year is Enjoy Life, Enjoy Golf, Impact Lives,” she said.
According to her, the Ladies Section has outlined a range of sporting and social activities designed to strengthen camaraderie among members while promoting the game of golf within and beyond the club.
“We are going to have an exciting year; we’re going to have a beautiful year. We have a lot of activities lined up, a lot of fun things coming up, games and beautiful things,” Eimiakhena said.
She noted that while golfing remains a recreational pursuit for members, the Ladies Section intends to go beyond leisure by implementing initiatives that positively affect the golfing community.
“More importantly, we’re going to be developing the communities,” she added.
Explaining the significance of the inaugural kitty, the Lady Captain said it marks the beginning of a series of similar social golfing events that will hold throughout the year.
“For today, we’re just having an inaugural kitty. Essentially, it’s welcoming me into the new office, and this inaugural kitty is the start of many more kitties to come,” she said.
Eimiakhena further explained that the theme for the year represents a shift from the club’s previous focus on sustainability to one centred on enjoyment and social engagement.
“We know last year was about sustainability; this year is about enjoying life,” she said.
She disclosed that the Ladies Section would focus on supporting three key groups within the golfing ecosystem as part of its impact initiatives.
“We’re going to be working with three sets of people. First are those that support the golfing community, the caddies and the course workers, and we want to impact their lives,” she said.
The Lady Captain added that the section would also support aspiring professional golfers seeking to build careers in the sport.
“We also have those professionals who want to start up as professionals, and we will support them,” she said.
In addition, Eimiakhena revealed that the section plans to invest in youth development through the club’s junior golf programme.
“We also want to support the junior clinic. We have a lot of aspiring young junior golfers who want to become very good golfers, not necessarily professionals but very good golfers,” she said.
She further noted that the Ladies Section would collaborate with golf professionals to improve the skills of members and young players.
“We’re going to be working with a lot of professionals to get our skills up, to ensure that our skills are better than what we saw last year,” she added.
Members of the Ladies Golf Section and other golf enthusiasts attended the event, which marked the start of the club’s social and competitive golfing activities for the year.
