Delta South politics heats up as Youth Group urges Edema to contest

A prominent Itsekiri youth group, Itsekiri Youths for Good Governance (IYGG), has called on former two-time President of the National Association of Itsekiri Graduates (NAIG), Prince Collins Oritsetimeyin Edema, to contest the Delta South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general election.

The appeal was contained in a statement issued after what the group described as a leadership meeting. The statement was jointly signed by the Delta South Coordinator of IYGG, Sam Oki Metsh, and the group’s Secretary, George Omatsuli.

According to the group, Edema has the experience and vision to represent the interests of the senatorial district at the National Assembly.

In the statement made available on Sunday, the group described him as a leader with a record in both private enterprise and public service.

They noted that Delta South Senatorial District, comprising the Itsekiri, Ijaw and Isoko ethnic groups, requires representation that can effectively articulate its interests at the national level.

The group said its call was based on Edema’s involvement in community and youth-related initiatives.

“We have observed your trajectory and believe you have the capacity to lead effectively,” the statement read in part.

The youth body also emphasised the need for unity, noting that the next senator for the district should be able to foster cooperation across ethnic and political lines.

IYGG referenced Edema’s previous leadership roles, including his tenure as President of the National Association of Itsekiri Students (NAIS) and later NAIG.

The group also mentioned his role as Sole Representative of the Olu of Warri to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The Delta South Senatorial seat remains a key position in Delta State politics, often attracting interest from various political actors across the district.

As of the time of filing this report, Edema had not made any official statement regarding a possible bid for the Senate.
