The Certified Institute of Auctioneers of Nigeria ,CIAN, has reviewed its training curriculum for the Basic Auctioneers Course, introducing an online course and examination system aimed at creating a uniform standard for individuals and organisations seeking to practice auctioneering in Nigeria.

The updated Basic Auctioneers Course has been approved by the Governing Council of the Institute and is designed to provide the minimum educational requirements for new entrants seeking registration as Certified Auctioneers.

According to the institute, the curriculum covers a wide range of professional areas, including bid-calling drills, real estate auctions, and the sale of personal properties such as automobiles, office and household equipment, industrial machines, agricultural products, art and antiques.

Other key components include the benefits of auctions, online auction technology, government auctions, auctioneers’ contracts, legal liabilities, and the code of professional ethics guiding the profession.

The programme will be delivered through online modules containing structured reading materials, after which participants will undertake an examination conducted through a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format. Candidates are required to score a minimum of 60 per cent to qualify for the institute’s induction programme, which will culminate in their registration as Certified Auctioneers.

Additional aspects of the course include preparation for auction day, handling commission bids, preparation of auctioneers’ sheets, conditions of sale, and the overall auction process.

The training is expected to benefit individuals aspiring to build careers in auctioneering as well as companies planning to establish auction departments.

In addition, the institute disclosed plans to introduce mandatory continuing professional education for practicing auctioneers to enhance their knowledge and align the profession in Nigeria with international best practices.
