In a continuation of her decade-long tradition, Dr. Betta Edu over the weekend broke fast with more than 1,500 physically challenged men, women, and children of Muslim and Christian faiths in the Karonmajigi community, behind the National Military Cemetery, Abuja.
The programme, which began during her tenure as Director General of the Primary Healthcare Development Agency and later as Commissioner for Health in Cross River State, was held this year to pray for Nigeria and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Dr. Edu interacted with visually impaired individuals and other persons living with disabilities, observing the sustained impact of previous empowerment initiatives, including POS machines and vocational training with startup support.
One beneficiary, Alhaji Ibrahim Jubril, who is blind, said, “Since you empowered us with the POS business on behalf of the President in 2023, my family of 15 has survived on it for over two years. We pray that the government continues to support persons living with disabilities.”
Dr. Edu, moved by the progress, called for increased support for persons with disabilities and stressed the importance of education and healthcare for their children. She also praised the local family health centre, urging its effective use to ensure proper care and immunizations.
The event, which combined Lent and Ramadan fasting traditions, highlighted interfaith unity, transcending religion, tribe, culture, and economic status. Dr. Edu prayed for peace, development, and improved security across the country, including for families and children in IDP camps.
Speaking on behalf of the Emir of Karonmajigi, Alhaji Suleiman Muhammed Katsina, Muhammed Dantani, Secretary of Communities of Persons Living with Disabilities in the FCT, commended Dr. Edu’s consistent support to the community, which started during her days as National Woman Leader of APC.
Residents expressed gratitude for her lasting impact through empowerment programmes, education, shelter, vocational training, and business startups, praising her for sharing joy, food, and hope with the community.
