The College of Nursing Sciences at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital (FNPH), Benin City, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, held its inaugural matriculation ceremony for 175 nursing students at the institution’s new site.
Speaking at the event, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Imafidon Osama Agbonile, congratulated the matriculating students and highlighted the institution’s long-standing contribution to nursing education. He noted that the hospital’s Post Basic School of Nursing, established in 1979, has produced highly skilled mental health nurses over the years.
According to him, the transition to a full-fledged College of Nursing Sciences is aimed at training professional nurses, midwives, and public health practitioners capable of meeting diverse healthcare needs. He urged the students to remain focused and committed to their studies.
In his remarks, the Acting Provost of the College, Mr. Saturday O. Okolo, formally welcomed the students into the nursing profession. He encouraged them to demonstrate dedication and discipline throughout their academic journey to ensure successful completion of their training.
Also speaking, the Edo State Director of Nursing Services, Dr. Aliu Nuhudeen, alongside the Nursing Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN), Edo and Delta Zone, Mr. Francis Amechi—represented by Mrs. Aigbe Endurance—advised the students to uphold the ethics and values of the nursing profession. They emphasized that nursing requires commitment, compassion, and sacrifice.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the oath-taking and capping ceremony, during which the students pledged to uphold the standards and ethics of the nursing profession.
Some of the matriculants who spoke expressed gratitude to their parents and the hospital management for the opportunity to be part of the historic inaugural intake.
The ceremony concluded with colourful cultural performances by the students, adding vibrancy to the landmark event.
