Students of Estate Management at Osun State University have been urged to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool to enhance professional competence and add value to their work.

The call was made by a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Mr. Akinropo Abraham, during a maiden programme organised by the Estate Management Students’ Association (EMSA) of the university on Tuesday.

Abraham stressed that while AI is transforming professional practice, it is not designed to replace traditional surveying but to improve efficiency and accuracy.

“Artificial Intelligence has not come to replace traditional surveying but to enhance how the profession is practised. As students, you must begin to embrace AI now—it will sharpen your skills and help you work smarter,” he said.

He, however, cautioned practitioners to critically evaluate information generated by AI, noting that the technology is still evolving and depends largely on data provided by humans.

According to him, there is a need for continuous research in the field to supply reliable data that will further improve AI applications in estate management.

“AI depends on data from us because the technology is still growing and constantly updating. Surveyors must always fact-check information before using it. Though still developing, it is inevitable for both practitioners and students,” he added.

Also speaking, the Head of the Department of Estate Management, Mrs. Adejumo Abiodun, dismissed fears that AI could lead to job losses in the profession.

“I don’t see why a knowledgeable estate surveyor should fear integrating AI. It will not take your job, but a colleague who understands how to use it properly could outcompete you,” she said.

In his remarks, the President of EMSA, Muhammad Adewoyin, said the programme was aimed at exposing students to emerging trends and practical insights in the profession.

He added that the association would adopt key strategies shared at the event to enhance students’ skills and strengthen public confidence in the next generation of estate surveyors and valuers.
