Nigerian lawyer and first-time author, Pearl Ehigimetor, has announced the release of her debut novel, When Tomorrow Found Us, a compelling work of fiction that explores the power of female friendship, faith and resilience in the face of life’s uncertainties.
The novel centres on the intertwined lives of four young ladies — Ese, Sewa, Freke and Felicity — each navigating defining moments at different crossroads of adulthood. Through their stories, Pearl presents sisterhood as an emotional anchor, showing how women lean on one another to survive hard seasons of life.
Ese, a brilliant engineer, grapples with abandonment after her father exits her life, leaving behind a legacy she neither sought nor desired. Sewa, an accomplished lawyer, struggles with buried secrets that threaten to unravel her carefully curated image and future ambitions. Freke faces the harsh realities of an unfair family structure and an unexpected pregnancy that pushes her into single motherhood, while Felicity confronts workplace harassment and abuse of power in her professional environment.
Despite these challenges, the women remain united, offering each other strength, empathy and hope. This bond ultimately reflects the theme behind the book’s title, When Tomorrow Found Us, with the subtitle …she smiled on us, which personifies tomorrow as female and symbolic of hope and renewal.
The 270-page novel employs flashbacks to link the past with the present, while projecting optimism for the future. It is currently available for purchase on Selar and Amazon, following its official virtual launch on February 8th, 2026.
Speaking on the long journey behind the book, the author described the project as one born out of passion and perseverance. “This book took the whole of the last five years to complete, however, the starting point was actually in the year 2016,” she said.
The author revealed that the journey was not without setbacks, including misplaced chapters and the painful decision to restart the manuscript close to its completion in September 2025. However, she noted that her determination to see the project through outweighed the delays encountered along the way.
When Tomorrow Found Us is described as a labour of love, driven by literary excitement and a deep desire to inspire, transform and encourage individuals navigating their own life journeys.
Coming from a literary background, with both parents being authors, Pearl says publishing her first novel is a proud moment that continues a family legacy, while also marking the beginning of her own voice in contemporary Nigerian fiction.
