SOKOTO — In a renewed push to deepen the fight against corruption and related offences, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Correspondents Chapel, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have agreed to strengthen collaboration focused on public enlightenment and accountability.

The commitment was reaffirmed when executive members of the Correspondents Chapel paid a courtesy visit to the Sokoto office of the ICPC, where both institutions underscored the importance of information, transparency and civic engagement in curbing corrupt practices.

Receiving the delegation, the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner of the ICPC in Sokoto State, Mr. Shintemg Paninga Binga, assured the journalists of the Commission’s readiness to work closely with the media to disseminate accurate and timely information to the public.

He described the media as a critical partner in shaping public attitudes against corruption, stressing that sustained awareness and education are essential to changing mindsets and strengthening institutions.

According to him, effective collaboration between the ICPC and journalists would not only amplify anti-corruption messages but also empower citizens to demand integrity in both public and private life.

“When we succeed, Nigerians—residents and visitors alike—will enjoy the country more,” Binga said, noting that corruption undermines development, service delivery and public trust.

The Commissioner further assured the Correspondents Chapel of the Commission’s openness, pledging to keep journalists informed of ICPC activities, initiatives and outcomes in Sokoto State. He described the visit as a demonstration of shared responsibility and a reminder that the anti-corruption fight requires collective action across institutions.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents Chapel, Mr. Ankeli Emmanuel, said the visit was aimed at strengthening the existing cordial working relationship between the Chapel and the ICPC.

He described journalists as strategic allies in the anti-corruption campaign, noting that credible reporting, investigative journalism and sustained public engagement are vital tools for exposing and preventing corrupt practices.

Mr. Emmanuel reaffirmed the Chapel’s commitment to responsible journalism that promotes transparency, fairness and the rule of law, while avoiding sensationalism and misinformation.

He added that closer collaboration would enhance public confidence in anti-graft efforts and encourage citizens to report corruption and related offences.

The meeting ended with both parties expressing optimism that the renewed partnership would lead to stronger public awareness, improved accountability and a more effective fight against corruption in Sokoto State and beyond.
