Mr Gabby: Pioneering Afro-Diaspora communities in Europe

By Benjamin Njoku

Gabriel Unaague, professionally known as Mr Gabby, has spent over two decades shaping the landscape of Afro-European music, not just as a performer but as a cultural architect.

From Italy to Germany, his work has helped establish Afro-music platforms, mentoring emerging artists and fostering communities long before Afrobeats became a global phenomenon.

Mr Gabby’s career began gaining traction in 2015 with the release of his debut single “Dorothy” under Mandilas Record. He followed with impactful collaborations like “The Industry” featuring Matador and “One In A Million” alongside Kelikume, Keys, and PrinceHandsome.

In 2016, he was awarded Best Rapper at the ADMA Awards in the Netherlands, affirming his lyrical craft and creative influence. Over the years, he has shared stages with Nigerian music icons such as 2Baba, Timaya, and J. Martins.

While performance has earned him recognition, Mr Gabby’s deeper contribution lies in building infrastructure for Afro-music in Europe. For over twenty years, he has organized events, connected artists with audiences, and created platforms that allowed African music to thrive outside its traditional markets.

“My goal has always been to create space for African artists to express themselves and grow, even when the world wasn’t paying attention,” he explains. His relocation from Italy to Germany in 2019 marked a turning point. Immersed in a new environment, Mr Gabby observed firsthand the struggles of African migrants and asylum seekers navigating unfamiliar systems. These experiences reshaped his vision: music was not just about entertainment-it was a tool for cultural affirmation, mentorship, and long-term community development.

Through his label, Gabby Records, he has supported emerging Afrobeats artists, offering guidance, resources, and platforms to amplify their voices. His approach emphasizes both artistry and structural thinking: building ecosystems, nurturing talent, and creating opportunities that extend beyond the individual.
