Lent, Ramadan Coincide: Ahmadu Bello Foundation urges unity, compassion

The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has extended warm greetings to Christian and Muslim faithful across Nigeria as they commence the sacred observances of Lent and Ramadan, describing the rare coincidence of both holy seasons as a powerful symbol of unity and shared spiritual heritage.

In a statement signed by its Director General/Chief Executive Officer, Engr. (Dr.) Abubakar Gambo Umar, the foundation said the simultaneous commencement of Lent and Ramadan offers a unique opportunity for national reflection and renewed commitment to peace and togetherness.

According to the foundation, the alignment underscores the deep common values shared by Christianity and Islam, including sacrifice, self-discipline, repentance, compassion, charity, and spiritual renewal.

“This rare alignment reminds us of the deep common ground between our faiths and calls on every Nigerian to embrace these principles in a spirit of unity and mutual respect,” the statement read.

The foundation appealed to Nigerians to use the sacred period to promote kindness, support for the vulnerable, forgiveness, and reconciliation, while recommitting themselves to the task of building a just, peaceful, and prosperous nation.

It particularly urged religious leaders to use their pulpits and platforms to preach messages that foster unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, rather than sentiments capable of sowing division among communities.

Similarly, political leaders were advised to refrain from divisive rhetoric or actions that could inflame tensions, and instead champion dialogue, inclusivity, and initiatives that advance national harmony and progress.

“As we journey through these sacred times, may we pray fervently for peace, stability, unity, and sustainable development in Nigeria,” the statement added, urging citizens to transcend ethnic, religious, and political differences for the good of present and future generations.

The foundation expressed hope that the lessons of Lent and Ramadan would deepen Nigerians’ resolve to work together as one people in pursuit of national development and enduring peace.
