Over 100 golfers from across Nigeria are set to participate in the 2026 Captain’s Inaugural Tournament at Lafia Golf Club in Lafia, Nasarawa State, on Saturday, February 14, 2026.
Engr. Ikechukwu Solomon, Competition Secretary of the club and a member of the Local Organizing Committee, said preparations are in full swing to host the elite tournament. Participants are expected to arrive in Lafia on Friday to familiarize themselves with the course and experience the hospitality of the state capital.
Solomon explained that the tournament is scheduled on Valentine’s Day deliberately, noting that golf embodies themes of love, aesthetics, and tourism.
“The first tee-off will be at 6 a.m., with staggered timings to efficiently manage both the course and the players. Marshals will be stationed on the front and back nine to coordinate golfers throughout the game,” he said.
He confirmed that golfers from clubs across Nigeria will participate, including two international players from the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom who are already in the country. Solomon also highlighted that trophies and prizes will be awarded in the men’s, ladies’, and veteran categories, along with other sundry prizes.
Speaking on the occasion, Captain of the club, Engr. Tony Effa, said the tournament will be unique, with the ceremonial tee-off performed by Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule.
He encouraged residents of Nasarawa State to embrace golf for its health, business, and leisure benefits, adding that the sport could boost the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) through the hospitality and transport sectors.
The Captain’s Inaugural Tournament marks the formal resumption of duties by a club captain. Lafia Golf Club, established over 20 years ago, has been led by eight captains to date.
