Amadeus varsity, Abia specialist hospital, FMC Umuahia sign MoU to boost clinical training

By Steve Oko

Amadeus University Amizi, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the Abia Specialist Hospital, and the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, to enhance clinical training for its students in medical and health sciences.

This comes as the university disclosed that it has offered admission to students from internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Northern Nigeria and Cameroon under its scholarship scheme.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Nzotta, who disclosed this at a pre-matriculation press conference, said the partnership was designed to provide structured clinical exposure, hands-on practical experience, and mentorship for students, while also promoting collaboration in research, capacity building, and healthcare service delivery.

According to him, the strategic partnership followed approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC), for the university to run Medicine and Surgery, Doctor of Pharmacy, Nursing Science, as well as Law programmes.

He said that the move underscored a growing push to improve the quality of medical training in Nigeria through stronger linkages between universities and tertiary healthcare institutions.

The VC further explained that with the recent NUC approvals, the two- year university now runs a total of 22 different programmes in seven faculties.

Prof . Nzotta said the university introduced entrepreneurship courses for all students to equip them with practical skills needed to create businesses and become self-reliant after graduation.

He commended the Chairman and Founder of the university, Dr Godwin Nwabunka, for his massive support and philanthropic spirit, which, he said, had created opportunities for indigent students to realise their academic dreams through the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the university’s zero-tolerance policy for cultism, examination malpractice, and other deviant behaviours, assuring that the institution was established to deliver high-quality education in a disciplined academic environment.

Responding to a question, the University Librarian, Professor Ngozi Ukachi, said the institution was established to bridge the yawning gap in university education in the South-East region, where demand for admission remains high amid limited opportunities.

She noted that the university operates a fully digital and physical library system designed to make learning and research easier for students.

Top management officials including the Registrar of the university, Ernest Onuoha; and member of the matriculation planning committee, Anyaso Anyaso, were present at the press conference.
