Abraham Lincoln once observed that while many can endure adversity, power is the true test of character. That reflection is relevant to the current political atmosphere in Abia State. Governor Alex Otti may find it useful to reflect on the experiences of past leaders, including governors whose political influence waned over time, and to draw lessons on the importance of restraint and inclusiveness in governance.

Public office inevitably attracts criticism, and governance is often strengthened when leaders listen to dissenting voices rather than respond defensively. Political communication, especially from those speaking on behalf of a sitting governor, is most effective when it is measured, professional and focused on policy rather than confrontation.

Governor Otti’s rise to office was the result of broad political engagement and support from various stakeholders ahead of the 2023 elections. Power, therefore, is neither automatic nor permanent. Electoral outcomes can change, and leadership transitions are a normal feature of democracy. Abia State will endure beyond any single administration.

There have also been conversations in the public space about identity and representation in government appointments. While perceptions may differ, it is important for leadership to emphasise unity and inclusiveness, ensuring that all segments of the state feel represented and respected.

Concerns have equally been raised by some citizens and observers about transparency in governance, particularly regarding project costs and procurement processes. Open communication and accessible information help build public trust and strengthen confidence in government.

Against this backdrop, Governor Otti is encouraged to exercise restraint in his engagements with federal leaders, including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Political disagreements are natural, but mutual respect and cooperation often yield greater benefits for states seeking federal attention and support.

Finally, a healthy democracy thrives on tolerance and the free exchange of ideas. Allowing room for opposition views and constructive criticism reinforces democratic values and strengthens leadership credibility.

Power is temporary, but respect and legacy endure. History and public opinion ultimately judge leaders by their capacity to unite, listen and govern with balance.
