We’re rebranding modeling as a professional career path in Nigeria – Onyemaechi Rapheal

Since its establishment in 2017, Raw Model Management has emerged as a pivotal force in Nigeria’s fashion ecosystem. Founded by Onyemaechi Rapheal, the agency has transitioned from a small-scale scouting operation into a prominent gateway for African talent, placing models with some of the world’s most prestigious luxury houses, including Dior, Gucci, and Saint Laurent.
Despite these high-profile successes, the agency’s journey highlights the significant structural challenges facing the African modeling industry. Rapheal, who serves as the agency’s director, notes that the mission extends beyond simple scouting; it is about providing a professional framework where none previously existed.
“Raw Model Management started on a small scale maintaining an outstanding commitment to discovering raw new faces, empowering and transforming them into international working stars,” Rapheal stated.
The agency’s track record includes the development of models such as Janet Jumbo, Daniel Awaridhe, Okiki Shodimu and Victoria Fawole just to mention a few who have become fixtures on international runways. However, Rapheal emphasizes that the path from Lagos to Paris is often obstructed by external factors, including visa processing delays and a lack of a formal regulatory framework within Nigeria itself. These systemic issues often lead to professional instability and exploitation within the wider industry.
“The lack of a formal regulatory framework for the modeling industry in Nigeria makes it hard to protect models, enforce contracts, and establish standardized practices,” Rapheal explained. “This contributes to exploitation, harassment risks, and unpredictable professional environments.”
Beyond logistical hurdles, the agency also navigates deeply ingrained cultural hurdles. In many Nigerian communities, modeling is still viewed with skepticism or seen as an unprofessional pursuit, which can deter parental support and talent retention.
“Negative societal perceptions of modeling in Nigeria sometimes make it harder for agencies to recruit and retain talent, and discourage parents from supporting their children’s aspirations,” Rapheal noted.
To counter these challenges, Raw Model Management focuses on “longevity” and “sustained development,” ensuring that models are prepared for the various stages of a professional career rather than just a single season of success. This long-term approach is central to the agency’s vision for the next decade.
“Our vision is to change the narrative of what modeling is in Africa,” Rapheal said. “We carefully scout, develop, and nurture our models, ensuring longevity all through different stages of their careers.”
As the agency looks toward the next five to ten years, the goal remains to serve as a cultural influencer that reshapes how the world views African modeling. By establishing rigorous systems and bridging the gap between local talent and global demand, Raw Model Management aims to solidify Nigeria’s position as a primary hub for the next generation of international fashion icons.
