KADUNA — Senator Sunday Katung (APC–Kaduna South) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, Kaduna State, describing the move as a major boost to education and socio-economic development in Southern Kaduna.

Katung made the commendation while addressing participants at the 2026 Gworok Cultural Festival held in Kagoro, Kaura Local Government Area of the state.

He noted that the institution, which commenced academic activities in September 2025 following Federal Government approval, is Nigeria’s first specialised university of applied sciences.

The senator expressed optimism that the university would stimulate local commerce, create employment opportunities and reposition Southern Kaduna as an emerging hub for academic excellence.

“The establishment of this institution will have far-reaching impacts — economically, socially and educationally. It is a strategic investment in our people and our future,” Katung said.

He also commended Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for his efforts in restoring peace and stability across the senatorial district.

“We pray for the sustenance of the peace we enjoy today and for even greater development across our communities,” he added.

Katung further praised the Gworok people for their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage despite the pressures of modernisation.

“I particularly salute our traditional rulers, elders, cultural custodians, women and youth who continue to uphold our heritage. The active involvement of young people in this festival gives hope that our culture will not only survive but thrive in the years ahead,” he said.

Earlier, the Chief of Kagoro, Ufuwai Bonet, explained that the annual festival serves as a platform for thanksgiving to God for protection, guidance and abundant blessings throughout the year.

According to him, the theme of this year’s celebration reflects gratitude for divine provision and sustained peace within the Chiefdom.

“We thank God for the bountiful harvest that has filled our barns, crowning the labour of our farmers with plenty,” Bonet stated.

He also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani for promoting inclusive governance and equal opportunities across Kaduna State.
