Save Nigeria group USA vows to sustain advocacy for Nigeria’s safety, freedom

By Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

The Save Nigeria Group (SNG) USA has reaffirmed its commitment to sustained advocacy for the safety, dignity and fundamental freedoms of Nigerians, following a high-level engagement with United States policymakers over the country’s worsening security and human rights situation.

The group’s President, Mr. Stephen Osemwegie, recently participated in a hearing at the United States Capitol Hill convened by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which focused on alleged violations of religious freedom in Nigeria.

During the engagement, Osemwegie held discussions with U.S. Congressman Riley Moore, where he restated his commitment to the defence of religious freedom and the protection of vulnerable communities in Nigeria. He also met with members of the USCIRF leadership, raising concerns over the need for sustained international attention on Nigeria, particularly regarding insecurity, mass displacement and religious persecution.

According to Osemwegie, Save Nigeria Group USA remains resolute in amplifying global advocacy on Nigeria while supporting humanitarian efforts for displaced persons across the country.

“As an organisation, we will not give up on Nigeria,” he said. “Our mission is to ensure a country where every citizen is safe, where freedom of religion and conscience is respected, and where people can live without fear.”

He disclosed that the group is expanding its scope of operations to include support for aid delivery to internally displaced persons, partnerships with grassroots civil society organisations, and the amplification of survivors’ voices on international platforms.

Osemwegie further revealed plans to launch a global engagement and outreach initiative aimed at mobilising Nigerians and allies across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and Africa in support of peace, justice and accountability in Nigeria.

Save Nigeria Group USA noted that its renewed advocacy comes against the backdrop of persistent violence, kidnappings and mass displacement affecting millions of Nigerians, particularly in areas impacted by insurgency and extremist activities linked to groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The group reiterated its resolve to continue engaging international partners, holding leaders accountable, and promoting collective action towards restoring peace, security and freedom in Nigeria.
