In August 2025, Nigerian fashion brand PappyNeedles Culture unveiled its 4DCulture Collection, a body of work that reflects a growing movement within the country’s creative industry: the intentional repositioning of indigenous fabrics for contemporary, global relevance.
The collection, which features Aso Oke jackets, urban bags, and lifestyle accessories, represents a deliberate effort to bridge Nigeria’s rich textile heritage with modern design sensibilities. Traditionally associated with ceremonial and cultural attire, Aso Oke is reimagined in this collection as a functional, urban material suitable for everyday and international fashion consumption.
The Aso Oke used for the collection was produced locally in Oyo State, a recognised hub of Yoruba cultural heritage and traditional textile production. Through contemporary tailoring, structured silhouettes, and refined finishing, PappyNeedles Culture transformed the handwoven fabric into modern jackets, travel bags, and utility pieces designed to appeal to global audiences while retaining cultural authenticity.
The 4DCulture Collection has been showcased on prominent cultural and fashion platforms, including the Amala Festival Runway Show and Ibadan Fashion Rising, both held in Ibadan, Oyo State—a state widely regarded as the heartland of Yoruba history and culture. These showcases celebrate indigenous creativity and provided a platform for the collection to engage both cultural stakeholders and fashion audiences.
The Creative Director of the brand, Akinkuolie Damilare Elijah, has actively engaged with the Oyo State culture and tourism ecosystem, contributing to conversations around cultural preservation, creative innovation, and the promotion of indigenous textiles. His work through PappyNeedles Culture has earned him recognition within the local fashion industry, with the brand receiving support and endorsement for its role in promoting Oyo State’s cultural heritage through fashion.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the collection, Akinkuolie noted that the project was conceived to demonstrate how locally sourced fabrics can be elevated for global relevance without compromising cultural identity. “The idea was to expand the possibilities of Aso Oke beyond traditional contexts, positioning it as a material that can exist confidently within urban and lifestyle fashion,” he said.
Since its launch in 2025, the 4DCulture Collection has continued to gain visibility, attracting clients from within Nigeria and abroad, reflecting a growing international interest in culturally grounded African fashion. Industry observers note that this aligns with a global shift toward heritage-led design, sustainability, and authentic storytelling.
PappyNeedles Culture, which also produces bespoke suits, kaftans, and Agbada, has steadily built a reputation for blending African heritage with contemporary luxury. The 4DCulture Collection represents a significant milestone in the brand’s evolution, highlighting the role of fashion as a cultural ambassador and a driver of Nigeria’s creative economy.
As Nigeria’s fashion and cultural industries continue to expand, initiatives such as the 4DCulture Collection demonstrate how indigenous craftsmanship, when thoughtfully redefined, can shape global perceptions of African design while sustaining local production and cultural pride.
