The President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, Francis Bunu, has outlined ambitious plans for 2026, promising improved workers’ welfare, extensive training, manpower development programs, and the signing of more Collective Bargaining Agreements, CBAs, to boost remuneration across the maritime sector.
Speaking during the union’s 2025 end-of-year celebration, Bunu said 2025 had been a productive year for MWUN, despite the challenges of a transitional government.
“We successfully conducted national, branch, and district elections, and maintained industrial peace and harmony across the sector,” he said. He commended government agencies and stakeholders—including NIMASA, NPA, Shippers Council, and NIWA—for collaborating with the union to ensure stability throughout the year.
Looking ahead, Bunu said 2026 would bring significant growth for the sector.
“Workers should expect more training programs, manpower development, and the signing of additional CBAs covering dockworkers, seafarers, NPA staff, and shipping personnel. With Nigeria’s Category C seat at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the sector is set to experience a boost, and the union will be at the center of that growth,” he stated.
On industrial relations, the MWUN President-General acknowledged ongoing challenges with companies that have resisted unionisation.
“We have scheduled meetings in early 2026 to resolve these issues. All workers must be carried along, and no group should benefit more than others simply because they lack representation,” he added.
Bunu also addressed concerns over the upsurge of drug importation through Nigerian ports, stressing that dockworkers are only responsible for offloading cargo.
He urged the federal government to engage with countries exporting these consignments to ensure vessels arrive in Nigeria free from contraband, and to enforce stricter investigations and penalties when violations occur.
On celebrating the contributions of workers, Bunu said the union’s first end-of-year party was meant to motivate staff and recognize outstanding performance.
“Workers must be encouraged and reminded that the union belongs to them. This celebration will now become an annual event, with awards given to honour dedication and hard work,” he said.
