Miva Open University says it has reached a major milestone, enrolling over 20,000 students since it began operations in May 2023.
The achievement signals growing trust in Miva’s model of flexible, technology-enabled higher education built for real life.
At a time when access, affordability, flexibility, and relevance remain key challenges within Nigeria’s higher education system, more learners are choosing Miva to pursue accredited university degrees while balancing work, family, and personal commitments.
Speaking on the milestone, Sim Shagaya, Group Chief Executive Officer of uLesson Group and Chancellor of Miva Open University, said: “We have just crossed an important milestone at Miva.
‘’The pace of adoption tells us something clear. Learners are ready for a different kind of university experience. One that fits into real lives without compromising on quality. To our students, thank you for trusting us with your future. To our team, thank you for building what truly matters. We are only getting started.”
Miva Open University was established to widen access to quality higher education for working professionals, entrepreneurs, parents, and first-time university students. Its workforce-ready programmes are designed to be flexible, affordable, and aligned with practical skills needed in today’s economy.
Beyond enrolment numbers, the milestone reflects broader impact. Students are gaining relevant skills, progressing in their careers, and contributing meaningfully to their communities and the wider Nigerian economy.
Grace Akubuiro, a Public Health student at Miva Open University, shared her experience: “Choosing Miva Open University has been one of the best decisions I made in 2025. I first came across Miva on Facebook, and what stood out immediately was the emphasis on flexibility.
“That was exactly what I needed. Coming from a traditional university, I did not think this level of flexibility was possible. At Miva, I have been able to run my business, work as a virtual assistant, and keep up with my studies, all while earning a 4.50 CGPA in my first semester.”
Miva continues to invest in improving access, strengthening the learning experience, and maintaining academic standards, while responding to the evolving needs of learners across Nigeria and beyond.
Looking ahead, Shagaya added, “By 2027, we aim to serve 100,000 students. Within a decade, one million.
“Some may see those numbers as ambitious. We see them as necessary. But this is not about numbers alone. It is about transformation. It is about building a Nigeria where every qualified learner has access to quality education. It is about a continent where young people are creating opportunity, not searching for it elsewhere.”
