By Samuel Oyadongha, Yenagoa
Activities ahead of the national delegates’ election of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) gathered momentum on Wednesday in Yenagoa as key aspirants began procuring nomination forms to contest for the position of President of the apex Ijaw socio-cultural organisation.
Among those who picked nomination forms at the Ijaw House were the incumbent Secretary of the INC, Engr. Ebipamowei Wodu; the 2nd Vice President, Alabo Nengi James; and Chief Kennedy Odiowei.
Also expected to procure nomination forms are Dr. Doodei Agbabou Week, a retired Director of Procurement at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and Elder Timi Kaiser-Wilhelm Ogoriba, both considered strong contenders in the race.
The aspirants are seeking to succeed the outgoing President of the INC, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, whose tenure is winding down.
Dr. Doodei Week, who retired from the NDDC in December 2025, is believed to enjoy strong connections within the commission. However, some close associates have suggested that he may have stepped down from the race, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Elder Timi Kaiser-Wilhelm Ogoriba is also emerging as a prominent aspirant, with his campaign reportedly drawing strength from his long-standing involvement in the Ijaw struggle and his close relationship with notable Ijaw leaders, including Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri.
Alabo Nengi James (OON), the current 2nd Vice President of the INC, is banking on his experience and influence within the Ijaw nation, as well as his strong ties with Ijaw elders, to secure the leadership position.
Speaking to journalists after collecting his nomination form, Engr. Ebipamowei Wodu pledged to introduce new ideas, dynamism and sustained reforms if elected.
He acknowledged existing divisions within the INC, stressing the need for unity among the Ijaw people.
“There have been divisions and infractions within the INC. As Ijaw people, we have not always worked together, even though the present executive has made efforts,” Wodu said. “We will ensure the unification of the Ijaw people so that we can speak with one voice.”
He added that his vision includes taking the Ijaw struggle for equity, justice and resource control to the international stage, within the framework of a united Nigerian federation.
The delegate election is expected to be keenly contested as stakeholders await the emergence of a new leadership for the Ijaw National Congress.
